Cloud, Web & Mobile

  • German: — | Turnus: winter | Language: de | Status: active (2026-winter) | Lecturer: Torben Weis (Distributed Systems, Univ. Duisburg-Essen)

Overview

The course explains cloud computing bottom-up: why it appeared (a re-centralization after PCs, driven by network effects and the economics of renting), what the offerings are called (SaaS/PaaS/IaaS/DaaS), how they are contractually and financially governed (SLAs, billing metrics), and what actually has to be built underneath (data centers, failure tolerance, replication, virtualization, instance pricing, virtual networks).

Slides are in German; notes here keep the German terms in quotes where they carry the exam wording (e.g. “Modellierung”, “Verfügbarkeit”, “Konfektionsgrößen”).

Materials

Local, immutable source set in master-cs/raw/cloud-web-mobile/ (converted with pdf2md):

LecturePDFMarkdownPagesConversion
101_historie.pdf01_historie.md35OK (text-based)
202_rechenzentren_iaas.pdf02_rechenzentren_iaas.md20PARTIAL — image-only slides lost their figures; captions only
303_virtualisierung_sandboxing.pdf03_virtualisierung_sandboxing.md42PARTIAL — 19 of 42 slides are figure-only (Firefox-printed); every diagram reconstructed into the concept page

Known extraction losses: the provider-landscape figure (L2), the Google rack photo (L2), and the “Historie” pyramid graphics (L1) exist only as captions in the Markdown. Re-read the PDF when a figure matters.

L3 is the worst case so far: the layer/VMM diagrams, the ring models, the IA-32-hole annotation, the shadow-table picture, the I/O proxy chain, the containers-vs-VMs image and the cgroup overview are all figures. They are redrawn as Mermaid graphs in virtualization-and-sandboxing, so nothing is lost from the notes — but pdf2md output alone is not sufficient for this lecture.

Exam notes

  • Prep page: 2026-winter — Cloud, Web & Mobile
  • Format/date not yet known — fill in once announced.
  • Recurring exam-shaped items so far: service-model classification, availability percentage → downtime arithmetic, buy-vs-rent crossover, failure-domain reasoning, spot/reserved/on-demand choice, Elastic IP vs DNS, DMZ purpose.
